"When he arrived he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death".

"So we sent some stuff up there and hope Steve has a quick and full recovery".

He was hit in the left hip, suffering injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding.

Scalise is still in critical condition but is doing better, according to a statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center where the congressman is now confined.

Scalise is said to be somewhat responding to medical staff and family, according to the doctors.

On Thursday, the hospital reiterated that Scalise will need more operations and will be in the hospital "for some time".

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Mr Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Dr Sava said. "It was never off my mind when I ran out there. the reason I was going to second base was Steve Scalise, my colleague, was fighting for his life in the hospital right now".

The FBI recovered a cellphone, computer and camera from Hodgkinson's white van and is examining them for evidence, the statement said.

The shooter, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL, was shot and killed by Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail.

MLB News reported that Rep. Rodney Davis said, "Today, Republicans and Democrats come together for America's pastime, and we can show the world that we can work together".

In recent months, Hodgkinson called Congressman Mike Bost's office at least 10 times with complaints about the Republican's stance on health care and his voting record, Bost said in a statement.

A shooter, killed by return fire from officers, sprayed rifle fire at congressional Republicans practicing on a diamond in Alexandria, Virginia, a Washington suburb. Capitol Hill Police officers stand watch outside the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, June 15, 2017, a day after a gunman opened fire on a lawmakers playing baseball and wounded House Maj.

Bailey is a member of Congressman Steve Scalise's protective detail. The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family.

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington. He said Republicans were on the field, shortly before the gunman began shooting at them. The assailant, who had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP, fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died.
