Sega launches free retro game collection for iPhone and Android

The service will release classic games once every two weeks, with the initial line-up of Mega Drive/Genesis games available now including Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, Phantasy Star II and Altered Beast. Said adaptations will include added features, such as leaderboards, cloud saves, and other basic functionalities that come with mobile games. If you choose to do so, you'll be able to remove ads entirely for a one-time payment of $1.99.

Mike Evans, chief marketing officer of Sega's mobile division in the West in San Francisco, said in an interview that nostalgic players can rediscover old games and share them for the first time with younger family members. It is taking the catalog from consoles like the Sega Genesis and putting them on iOS and Android devices.

"Above all else, SEGA Forever is a celebration of nostalgia".

The collection officially kicks off tomorrow with five games, all of which will be available for free on Google Play and the iOS App Store. Join us on a journey of rediscovery as we roll out two decades of classic games free on mobile. It's called Sega Forever. All the other games will also cost you that much, though take note that you can play them offline, save and see your name on the leaderboard even if you play the ad-supported versions. This will expand to cover multiple console generations over time, SEGA says, and icludes both "official emulations and ported games". The games can be played on the touchscreen or via a synchronized Bluetooth controller.

SEGA Forever is an app that will offer countless SEGA classics for free, and you can play all of them on your mobile.

Nintendo isn't the only company with an extensive back catalog of retro classics.

Following tomorrow's launch, the SEGA Forever collection will continue to grow with additional releases coming every two weeks. Visit the Sega Forever website here.
