U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is meeting with leaders of Central America and senior officials from Mexico as President Donald Trump signals a policy shift toward the region.
In May, Trump hired lawyer Marc Kasowitz - who previous year represented the Trump campaign and has previously represented Trump personally - to serve as the president's attorney for investigation-related issues.
The vice president's office said Pence's decision to retain Cullen underscores his desire to fully cooperate with any inquiries related to the Russian Federation probe, and is in line with what Trump has done in hiring Kasowitz.
"The vice president is focused entirely on his duties and promoting the president's agenda", said Pence's Director of Communications Jarrod Agen.
The Journal revealed that a source close to Pence would said the VP would likely use the funds for his own personal legal bills.
Among the questions Sanders deflected Thursday was to whom exactly Trump was referring to as "bad and conflicted people" in one of his early morning tweets.
Mr Comey, who had been leading one of several Russian Federation inquiries, testified to Congress last week that the president had pressured him to drop the inquiry into Mr Flynn. The lawyer, Richard Cullen, a former attorney general, has previously worked with Pence and he will now help him respond to the federal inquiries.
Summary: Vice President Mike Pence is taking moves to protect himself by retaining his own lawyer during the Russian Federation investigation. The Associated Press and other news organizations have also reported that Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in December proposed a back channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin.
While a sitting president is unlikely to face criminal prosecution, obstruction of justice could form the basis for impeachment. The adviser said that people on Pence's staff have not lawyered up as far as this person knew but added, "man, what a stressful deal".
Trump ultimately fired Flynn for misleading the vice president.
"This apparent pivot by the investigative team shows that they have struck out on trying to prove collusion and are now trying to switch to another baseless charge", the document said. He chose Cullen earlier this week, after interviewing several candidates.
