After nearly two years of rumour and speculation, news dropped officially on Wednesday that UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will be boxing Floyd Mayweather on august 26 in Las Vegas. Nonetheless the fight has been announced complete with match rules and an official date of August 26 (August 27 AEST) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In March, Mayweather announced that he was coming out of retirement specifically to fight McGregor.
"They went smooth. Floyd Mayweather surrounds himself with smart people and we got the deal done". "I thought it would be an impossible deal to do, but it was the right fight at the right time and we got it done".
"Part of the fun of this fight is whether Conor McGregor in a 12-round fight is going to be able to touch Floyd Mayweather". Twelve minutes later, Mayweather added, "It's official", also in all caps, above a promotional poster.
McGregor, 28, is an outspoken flashy Irishman with an amateur boxing background who has dominated the mixed martial arts scene with his charisma as much as his impressive 21-3 professional career record.
Speculation over the fight initially started when Conon O'Brien asked McGregor about possibly fighting Mayweather during the July 2, 2015 episode the "Conan O'Brien Show". Mayweather is a five-division world champion and has a 49-0 record.
Jeff Sherman, the oddsmaker at the Westgate sports book in Las Vegas, made Mayweather a minus-1000 favorite.
"The reason he's such a superstar is this guy will fight anyone, anywhere and at any time", UFC chief Dana White said about his fighter.
The fight is expected to be a pay-for-view blockbuster, as organizers are hoping it can challenge the 4.6 million pay-per-view buys for Mayweather-Pacquiao.
"Conor McGregor is a massive star in MMA and UFC but has never gone inside a boxing ring before". "With Conor McGregor not being a boxer, this is more of a mainstream global event".
"The problem, from a television/marketing perspective is Floyd Mayweather has been dominant for so long that people take him for granted", Espinoza said.
"And obviously the fans wanted it too". McGregor was awarded the decision win in that bout, which took place after Diaz submitted the Irish star in their first encounter, last March.
Mayweather retired in September 2015 according to the Associated Press.
