Lakers To Trade Russell, Mozgov For Brook Lopez

According to Wojnarowski, the Lakers are sending D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov to the Nets for Brook Lopez and the 27th pick in the draft.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade hadn't been consummated Tuesday.

Russell was drafted from Ohio State by the Lakers with the No. 2 overall pick in 2015. A year ago saw him put up 15.6 points and 4.8 assists per game, both career bests. With the Lakers selecting at No. 2 again they were able to pair the talented youngster with Mozgov, who has three years and $48 million left on his contract, and send them both to Brooklyn.

The deal looks like an immediate win for the Nets, who pick up an intriguing young prospect in Russell while taking on Mozgov's salary, but it may also hint at bigger aspirations for the Lakers. Russell has one more season on his rookie contract worth $5.5 million with a team option for $7 million the following season.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets have made a deal two days before the 2017 NBA Draft. On top of that, he provided some of the most spectacular moments of that college basketball season.

For now, Russell will likely be replaced at point guard by Lonzo Ball. Lopez's expiring deal sets up the Lakers and new president Magic Johnson, who reportedly already have been discussing a trade involving IN guard Paul George, to have additional cap space next summer.

It is surprising that he has been shipped for Lopez though considering the Lakers are attempting to acquire Paul George from the Indiana Pacers.
