In hiding for a month, judge Karnan held in Coimbatore

Justice Karnan was arrested from a resort at Malumichampatti near Coimbatore between Podanur and Madukkari.

The West Bengal police, who had taken him into custody on Tuesday, are likely to bring him to Kolkata on Wednesday, the TV channel said. He was sent to Mumbai and then to Kolkata.

On May 9 this year, the Supreme Court of India had sentenced Justice Karnan to six months imprisonment for contempt of court.

Since he was absconding, he missed the formal farewell which is usually given to every retiring high court judge.

Justice (retired) Karnan was arrested in Tamil Nadu last night. "It shows complete lack of respect of the Supreme Court by the Executive".

The Supreme Court sentenced justice Karnan to six months in prison on charges of contempt on May 9, a first for a serving judicial officer in what has been an unprecedented face-off in the upper judiciary over alleged corruption.

The apex court earlier on May 19 rejected Justice Karnan's plea for recall of the six-month jail term for contempt of court, stating that the petition was "not maintainable" in the court.

But the order was flawed and a loophole might enable Karnan to escape punishment, News18 said.

Following this, the seven judge bench proceeded with the contempt hearing, and asked Justice Karnan to submit himself to a medical examination.

May 2: Karnan orders issuance of non-bailable warrants against seven judges of the Supreme Court, including the CJI. Khehar, heard Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi who said that Justice Karnan should face contempt proceedings for his "scurrilous" letters against sitting and retired High Court and Supreme Court judges. Only those who are mentally unstable will pass such orders, it's a mad order. Hours after Karnan orders CBI probe against SC judges. They need doctor's help, I don't.

Panangad police said they came to know about Karnan's presence in the area only from newspaper reports.

The police managed to find him on Tuesday after a weeks long search.
