James T. Hodgkinson shot House Rep. Steve Scalise on Wednesday before he was fatally shot by police who had been guarding the House majority whip on the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field, officials said. Two Capitol Police officers sustained relatively minor injuries. In a national address, Trump appealed for unity following the morning assault in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia.
"Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip". Scalise remains in critical condition, though doctors said Friday his vital signs have stabilized.
He also noted in one July 29, 2012 letter that MSNBC's "The Rachael Maddow Show" is "one of my favorite TV shows". Jack McClenahan, a retired Belleville business owner, said he had several unpleasant run-ins with Hodgkinson over the years while Hodgkinson protested a favored Democratic political cause outside the local post office. "She had no idea he felt as strong as he did", Wagner said.
Suspected gunman James Hodgkinson was a former volunteer for the Sanders presidential campaign, the newspaper noted.
"[James] was home all day long and he just wanted a break", she said, adding that she did not know if he had taken any weapons with him as he left. The popular annual face-off, which raises money for charity, is scheduled to go forward as planned Thursday evening at Nationals Park in Washington.
Spicer says the president was also briefed by Scalise's medical team and spoke with Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle during the attack on a Republican Congressional baseball practice. His lawyer, Lyndon Evanko, told ABC News that Hodgkinson and his wife were caretakers to at least two girls who died in tragic circumstances.
