Governor Cuomo Signs Bill Ending Child Marriage in NY

The NYS Intelligence Center established a 24-hour call center where counties could report and receive assistance for potential disruptions, supported by secure communications channels that connected NY with resources from federal agencies and other states.
"This administration has worked tirelessly to defend exploited and disadvantaged New Yorkers, provide minors with the rights and protections that they deserve, and ensure that women are empowered to have control over their own lives", Cuomo said.
Under a previous, almost 80-year-old state law, children as young as 14 were allowed to marry if they obtained permission from both their parents and the court.
The legislation raises the age of consent from 14 to 18, and amends the process to require parental and judicial consent for marriage between 17- and 18-year-olds.
The governor of NY has ordered a review of the cyber security of the state's election system following reports of Russian attempts to hack into American voting systems.
Cuomo says raising the marriage age is a "major step" in protecting children and preventing forced marriages.
Human Rights Watch has done extensive research on child marriage around the world, interviewing hundreds of married children in countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Malawi, Nepal, South Sudan, Tanzania, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.
