Farmers to burn government resolution on loan waiver today

The loan waiver will for up to Rs 2 lakh for small and marginal farmers (up to 5 acres) and a flat Rs 2 lakh relief for all other marginal farmers, irrespective of their loan amount, thus paving the way for eventual total waiver of agricultural debts to implement another major poll promise of the ruling party.

"The government appears to be confused over the norms and parameters to be set for the loan waiver". Uttar Pradesh health minister Siddharth Nath Singh made the announcement that the cabinet has unanimously chose to waive off farm loans up to Rs 1 lakh for small and marginal farmers.

Raju Shetti, chief of Swabhimani Paksha said they have already conveyed their disapproval of the conditions to the government. Loans outstanding as on June 20 would also be waived. "We will stage agitations across the state and burn the GR copy".

Singh reasserted his government's commitment to provide free power to farmers and appealed to all big and well-to-do farmers to voluntarily surrender their power subsidies so that small and marginal farmers could have access to power they otherwise could not afford.

The GR says that the benefit of the loan scheme was meant exclusively for agriculturists whose sole source of income is from farming. "We will be writing off the loans of all deserving and needy farmers".

"Loans worth Rs 8165 crores will be waived, benefitting 22,27,506 farmers across the state", said Siddaramaiah.

The government issued a revised GR on Tuesday evening, that made government employees, contractors, teachers-professors, income tax payers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals with the annual income of less than Rs4 lakh and the owner of any four wheelers eligible for the interim waiver of Rs 10,000. However, the core committee of ministers under revenue minister Chandrakant Patil fixed some eligibility criteria for this loan advance and some of the norms were not acceptable to the farmers groups that are holding talks with the government.
