USA lawmakers returned to regular business on Thursday and prepared to play their annual charity baseball game, one day after a man who had expressed anger toward President Donald Trump opened fire on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he is being treated, said in a statement that Scalise underwent a second surgery "related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg" from previous day. "His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations".
Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update Saturday on behalf of the Scalise family.
Investigators say Hodgkinson shot House Rep. Steve Scalise on Wednesday before he was killed by police who had been guarding Scalise on the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field.
The two Congressional Baseball Team managers, Republican Rep. Joe Barton of Texas and Democratic Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, told reporters on Wednesday that lawmakers would still host the game as planned.
On that day, a man later identified as the attacker approached Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC in the parking lot of the Alexandria, Virginia, ballfield, asking him, "Excuse me, sir, who's practicing today, Democrats or Republicans?" as Duncan recalls the encounter.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) greets Director of the Office of Management Mick Mulvaney before Democrats and Republicans face off in the annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park in Washington, U.S., June 15, 2017.
"We started giving him the liquids, I put pressure on his wound in his hip", Brooks said.
The morning after visiting Scalise in the hospital, Trump said the congressman's challenges are "more difficult" than first thought. They said Scalise dragged himself from the infield as the shooting continued.
Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died.
Capitol Police officer David Bailey, who chased down the gunman despite being wounded himself, hobbled out to the pitcher's mound on crutches to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game.
The attack happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park where lawmakers were practicing for a congressional charity baseball game.
Earlier Thursday, President Donald Trump commented on the congressman's condition, saying Scalise was "in some trouble" but that he hoped the congressman would be OK.
"They saved a lot of lives", the president said. He had a history of posting angry messages against Trump and other Republicans on social media.
Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".
