Cavaliers let go of GM David Griffin

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said in a statement Monday, June 19, that the Cavaliers will not extend Griffin's current contract when it expires June 30. After all, James was openly campaigning for a contract extension for Griffin, and with Griffin wanting a larger role with the organization after taking the Cavaliers to three Finals in as many years on the job.

Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin talks with the media before the game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls at Quicken Loans Arena. Cleveland then took down top seed Boston in five games to win its third straight Eastern Conference title and earn a third matchup with the Warriors.

Richard Jefferson says the Cavaliers players were "shocked" to hear Cleveland was parting ways with general manager David Griffin late Monday night.

U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) tweeted on Tuesday she would be honored to have the Warriors come to the White House and be honored for their National Basketball Association title. It is very possible Chauncey Billups could replace Griffin as general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers and it could be a very good thing. Griffin therefore leaves Cleveland with peace of mind, knowing that he chased a title from the moment James chose to return in 2014 right up until his last few hours on the job. Irving didn't completely blossom until LeBron James returned to the team, yet it is now being reported that teams are inquiring about the 25-year-old All-Star. It said, "If no one appreciated you Griff I did, and hopefully all the people of Cleveland".

This may continue to be a messy situation as LBJ is set to become a free agent the offseason of 2018. According to Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers' front office had been in a "tough spot" this week while engaged in trade talks, "constantly needing to address Griffin's future with rival executives". True to form, Griffin proactively responded to the second-place finish by pursuing trades for All-Stars Paul George and Jimmy Butler this week, according to reports, even as his own future remained uncertain. "We got us 1", James tweeted.

Griffin, though, did not get an extension after the Cavs won the title previous year and he essentially worked as a lame duck during a sometimes turbulent 2016-17 season.

And again, the opportunity to get better is now because with James' walk year approaching, patience could prove fatal. Those positions are now filled.
