West died Friday night after "a short but fearless battle with leukemia", the family said.
LA Police Chief Charles Beck also took part in the tribute along with some special guests. DC Comics and Los Angeles are teaming up to shine a Bat-signal in the sky on Thursday evening as an ode to the the former Dark Knight.
Before the people of Gotham called on Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale or Ben Affleck for growly, rubber-nippled, pointy-eared salvation, there was Adam West.
Adam West played Batman for 2 years on the ABC series along with portraying the superhero in the first film adaptation. "There will never be another Batman like Adam West and there will never be another Adam West".
Adam West recently died of leukemia, and he's still being celebrated by fans who loved him as the 1966-1968 Batman.
Actor Burt Ward who played Robin alongside West's Batman also paid tribute to the late actor saying the two enjoyed "an unbelievable friendship".
The iconic circle of light with a bat-shaped silhouette glowed on the City Hall tower. On Sunday, US TV network Fox will show the episode The Dating Game, which features West winning an auction for the Medieval Castle restaurant.
Ward said: "I'm here to tell you that my friend Adam would want every single one of you to be incredibly happy and to be joyous".
For fans who can't make it to the bat-signal lighting, the West family encourages donations to the Adam West Memorial Fund for Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
In recent years, though, he's lent his voice to Mayor Adam West, a recurring character on the animated series Family Guy.
