Bacsinszky overcame raucous support for Kiki Mladenovic to advance to her second Roland Garros semi-final 6-4 6-4 before unseeded Ostapenko rattled Caroline Wozniacki with a 4-6 6-2 6-2 success. I saw her in the gym just right after our matches today, and so we both said, like, mutually to each other, "Well done".
"She served pretty well, and then I just got my game back (so afterwards) I felt quite confident". "If I have a chance to go to the net, I'm going to the net and I just finish the point, because I think it's easier", she said. So was her assertive shot-making, which 11th seed Caroline Wozniacki found hard to read in the tennis interruptus of the second and third sets.
And to keep things nice and simple the victor of Mladenovic/Bacsinszky will meet the victor of Ostapenko/Wozniacki in the semi-finals, likewise the winners of today's men's quarters.
These included a quarter-final match between fourth seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain and his 20 seed compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta. "I actually didn't expect that it would be here in Paris (for my birthday), but I am going to enjoy it and I will have (birthday celebration) plans after the tournament". At 40-0, one final forehand ripped crosscourt was met with an errant backhand reply and Ostapenko had sealed her spot in the semifinals against 30th seed Timea Bacsinszky. It will be really great to play here when it will be my birthday.
Karolina Pliskova has leveled her semifinal match against Simona Halep at the French Open.
Ostapenko, who turns 20 on Thursday when she faces fellow birthday girl Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland, who will be 28, is the first Latvian woman to reach a grand slam semi and first teenager to do so at the French since Serb Ana Ivanovic in 2007.
Wozniacki saved a break point to edge 2-1 ahead in the decider before another rain interruption. Two more quarterfinals matches featuring all seeded players take place on Wednesday at Roland Garros.
"She kept me on the back foot".
World No 14 Mladenovic briefly threatened a comeback in the second set, racing into a 3-1 lead, but Bacsinszky held her nerve in the stop-start encounter to win four straight games before serving out for a spot in the semis.
Ostapenko is looking forward to her birthday showdown against Bacsinszky, adding: "We are good friends, because we played the doubles in China a year ago, and that's how I got to know her. And I think the courts I play are much bigger".
Djokovic's progress has been troublesome in comparison, being stretched to five sets by Diego Schwartzman in round three - but the battle-hardened Serb is well-versed in the business end of slams and usually raises his game.
