Celtics, 76ers finalize deal to swap top picks

In short, Philadelphia gets the guard it wanted in Fultz, and Boston gets a draft-pick haul in exchange for sliding down only two spots this year.

The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers have officially completed a blockbuster trade that sends the No. 1 overall pick in this week's National Basketball Association draft from Boston to Philadelphia.

"We think there's a really good chance the player we'll take at three is the same player we would have taken at one", the Celtics president of basketball operations told reporters Monday following the team's decision to trade away the No. 1 overall draft pick. Ainge wouldn't get into specifics, but his comments suggest the Celtics wouldn't have taken either player at No. 1 had they kept the pick.

The Philadelphia 76ers thrilled their fans and left some suspense surrounding Thursday's National Basketball Association draft.

Fultz averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 25 games during his lone college season at Washington, excelling on a team that finished 9-22 and lost its final 13 games. However, if either of those 2019 picks result in the first overall selection, Boston will instead receive the other first round pick. They're big on defense so I think the tools that I have to be a defensive player I think would help them get out in transition. The Celtics will acquire the 2018 Lakers pick the Sixers own if it falls between No. 2 and 5.

After Philadelphia picks Markelle Fultz No. 1, the Lakers will probably take Lonzo Ball No. 2.

Jimmy Butler has been the guy most people around the league believe the Celtics are interested in going after.

Given the plethora of young talent that the Sixers now have at their disposal, including Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and Dario Saric, the Sixers next step is plotting how aggressive to be in free agency this summer to complement those young homegrown top-of-the-lottery players.

"We'll still be able to get the player we want in the draft". "We feel like we're going to be adding the best player and the best fit (at No. 1)". Otherwise, the Celtics will have a choice of first-rounders in 2019 - either from Sacramento or Philadelphia, whichever pick is higher.

The short answer is nothing stands in the way of Fultz becoming a Sixer now.

They had to reach agreement on a swap with the team who had the first overall, the Boston Celtics.

Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love are the Cavaliers' major trade chips, but with both signed to multi-year deals, it might not make sense to deal either for one guaranteed year of George.

The deal is a win-win for both sides.

Ainge confirmed the Celtics brought in Tatum for a workout Monday, and that the team plans to host Jackson for a workout Tuesday. "I am not afraid of that", Ainge said, per Scott Souza of the Providence Journal.
