Though many thought traveling to the west coast could solve the slumping and injured New York Mets, but it was not to be; at least in Game 1.
Russell Martin has seven home runs this season, and five have either tied the game or given Toronto a lead, including his tying shot in a victory over the White Sox on Sunday.
Jose Reyes blasted a solo homer in the third inning and a two-run homer in the seventh, Jay Bruce laced a solo shot in the fourth, and Gavin Cecchini tallied his first career homer in the fifth inning, a two-run shot. Still, Monday's first-inning homer moved him into a tie with the Brewers' Eric Thames for the National League lead in home runs at 20.
Kershaw has allowed more than one home run in four of his starts this season, matching the number of multi-homer games he had in 81 starts over the previous three seasons.
"It's unbelievable", Mets manager Terry Collins said. Volquez is just 3-7 with a 3.72 ERA, but is 3-0 in his last four starts, including his no-hitter on June 3.
The Dodgers built an 8-0 lead before the Mets rallied, launching three of their four home runs against Clayton Kershaw, including two by Jose Reyes.
The Mets were down 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh, but right-hander Fernando Salas allowed two runs to effectively push the game out of reach. "You hope mistakes are hit for singles or doubles or whatever". Wheeler faced five batters and gave up four earned runs before getting an out in the first inning.
Will the Mets and Dodgers struggle to score runs tonight in L.A. when the two teams meet at 10:10PM ET? Jay Bruce also connected and rookie Gavin Cecchini hit a two-run shot for NY.
The Indians ace is 6-2 with a 3.58 ERA and is a shoo-in for this year's Midsummer Classic. Montero went 3 2/3 innings in relief of Wheeler and allowed only one on three hits, walked two and struck out five.
Mets starter Zack Wheeler (3-5) was tagged for seven runs and eight hits in two innings. His fastball was hit hard, he couldn't control his breaking pitches and he had the worst start of his career against the Chicago Cubs.
A dismal start by Zack Wheeler (3-5) put them in a hole that was too big to climb out, the bullen couldn't keep it close and Chase Utley continued to torment the Mets like he did for all those years in Philadelphia. It was his 19th home run this season. CF Juan Lagares had surgery in NY to fix a fracture in his left thumb. Right-handed reliever Sergio Romo (left ankle sprain) was activated from the DL and struggling RHP Josh Fields was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Mets are 0-4 in their last four games versus a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15, and 5-1 in Gsellman's last six starts with four days' rest.
Over on the Dodgers' side, they're going with RHP Brandon McCarthy on Tuesday. Wheeler will look to improve upon his 4.48 ERA and 1.46 WHIP when he does battle against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Monday.
