Oregon State had to rally from behind for victory in game one.
LSU had issues early in the game.
"We caught them on a night where they didn't play as well as usual, and we played very, very well".
The Beavers (56-4), who matched the school-record win streak they set earlier this season, took control of Bracket 1.
This team says they have all the faith in the world in their freshman on Monday night against the Beavers.
"My dad always told me to be the best, you've got to beat the best", said Eric Walker, who is slated to start Monday night. "Everyone is still focused on getting more because we know they are a great team and can come back at any time". Let's not miss that moment.
LSU (49-18) will again face Florida State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT in an elimination game.
"We've just got to get the job done Wednesday and then live to play another day on Friday".
LSU starting pitcher Eric Walker had to leave the game while facing the lead off hitter in the top of the third inning due to a tired muscle in his right forearm.
Like Florida State in Saturday's game, Oregon State jumped out to a first-inning lead Monday on an RBI single by Trevor Larnach. "I don't think there's anything structurally wrong". And I thought: 'What the heck, let's just go again.' So we took off (on the hit-and-run). "I just couldn't get that put-away when it was crunch time". Oregon State coach Pat Casey then huddled with the offense.
The scoring onslaught started for the Beavers in the 1st when Steven Kwan opened the game with a bunt single.
Harrison broke into a wide smile as he watched the ball fly out, his trot turned into a run and he whooped and pounded his chest as he approached teammates waiting at home plate. KJ Harrison is there big home run hitter with 8 bombs. "That's the kind of stuff you dream of growing up as a little kid, and for it to come true and at such a big stage, it was an awesome feeling".
In the wake of some unsettling news with Luke Heimlich, the Beavers could have panicked and packed up their bags, but the soft-spoken Fehmel put OSU players, fans, and coaches at ease. A newspaper in OR made it public that Heimlich pleaded guilty to molesting a young child when he was a teenager.
The Tigers were able to break up the shutout in the 8th inning thanks to a solo home run off the bat of centerfielder Zach Watson.
"I guess the main thing was to keep them off-balance as best I could", Fehmel said. "Every guy goes through a little bit a rough patch, each guy is not immune to it and I think some time off gave him kind of what he needed". Chase Haney (3-2) worked two-third of an inning for the win. Those eight pitchers combined for 12 walks, the most in Mainieri's 11 years at LSU.
Harrison's lone hit was the grand slam.
It was the first CWS grand slam since 2010, which was hit by TCU's Matt Curry at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Harrison here blasts the ball into left center of TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, an area of the field that plays famously long.
Oregon State awaits Florida State or LSU in the Bracket 1 final on Friday. Oregon State (56-4) has won 23 in a row and will play Friday in a semifinal against Wednesday's victor.
