Trump lawyer says President isn't under investigation, despite tweets

Examining such possible charges will allow investigators to interview key administration figures including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and possibly Trump himself, said the source familiar with the Mueller investigation.

This tweet does two things: First, it confirms news reports (paywall) that Trump himself is under investigation, reportedly for obstruction of justice for abruptly firing FBI director James Comey.

In May, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel to lead the probe.

Trump was strongly critical of some of Comey's testimony but said Comey had vindicated him by saying while he was at the agency, Trump was not the subject of the FBI's Russian Federation probe. Comey also testified Trump had directed him to drop a related FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. An official confirmed to Fox News that Trump was referring to Rosenstein in the statement.

Now, Mr Trump has suggested that he is indeed being investigated.

The move to investigate the US President comes after Mr Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey on May 9, according to the The Post.

"Evidently the White House is considering firing Mueller". A spokesman for Kasowitz did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.

"After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my "collusion with the Russians", nobody has been able to show any proof". Comey has said three times I didn't do anything with the Russians. In a special hearing, last week, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee he believes Trump fired him because he resisted presidential requests to drop the Russian Federation investigation, especially as it pertained to Flynn, the former national security adviser.

"Failure to follow these protocols could result in criminal or civil penalties, and could form the basis of legal claims, legal presumptions, or jury instructions relating to spoliation of evidence", the memo states.

Rosenstein is the one person in the USA government who has the authority to fire Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor brought on to run the investigation.

Trump is under pressure to reveal whether he has any tape recordings of private conversations with Comey. She was appointed to the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight board in 2012 by President Obama, then appointed to the associate attorney general position by Trump.

Rosenstein told the Associated Press earlier this month that when he hired Mueller he discussed the possibility of having recuse himself "if anything that I did winds up being relevant to his investigation" and if recusal is necessary.

Pence had taken over the transition team from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. "Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?", Trump tweeted just before 4 p.m. EDT.
