Portugal vs Mexico 2017 Confederation Cup group stage match end in draw

A late header from Hector Moreno salvaged a 2-2 draw for Mexico in their opening FIFA Confederations Cup match against Portugal.

Forward Nani scored but a review by video assistants showed a Portugal player was offside in the build up to the goal.

Silva, who has just moved from FC Porto to AC Milan in a transfer worth almost 40 million euros, has scored seven goals in eight games since his debut with the national team in a friendly against Gibraltar in September.

Cedric Soares' deflected shot then put Portugal back in front - only for Hector Moreno to head home for Mexico in injury time.

The second match in Group A ended all squad as Mexico held Portugal to a late 2-2 draw at the Kazan Arena on Sunday.

Portugal take on tournament hosts Russian Federation in their next group-stage outing on Wednesday afternoon, before then facing outsiders New Zealand three days later.

Group A also includes Russian Federation and New Zealand which played their game on Saturday. Now we need to think of the next game, which we have to win.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo: "It was not the result we wanted, the team had nearly won and we suffered in the last minutes, but this is football". Portugal's lone loss in this span was a 3-2 defeat against Sweden at home.

"Regarding Ronaldo, he is motivated, and what I can see is that he is taking the competition very seriously, is totally dedicated to training and thinking about the next game against Mexico", the striker said. In previous years his 50-yard run might have taken him through on goal; this time the Mexico defence caught up but his composure in laying the ball off was a reminder of his enduring quality. It will come as little surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo and Javier Hernandez were at the heart of it, although it will raise a few eyebrows that only one of them scored in the 2-2 draw.

However, Portugal, and Ronaldo, were not to be denied.

Portugal and Chile both had goals disallowed for offside.

"We were at least as good as they were and they're the current European champion", said the Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio.

"He is an example for us, the way he works, the way he plays", Patricio said.

There's still plenty that can go wrong for Mexico.

Southampton defender Cedric made it 2-1 to Portugal in the 86th minute. Or go into the referee's ear and say "Hold on, there was a problem three phases back, that we need to have a look at", that to me was very odd.
