Portugal and Mexico draw 2-2 in Confederations Cup

Mexico soccer team coach Juan Carlos Osorio said on Sunday his team did well against Portugal in their first Confederations Cup opener in Russia's Kazan.

"I stand by Ronaldo's character and integrity, both as a man and as an athlete", said Santos, who coached Ronaldo when the player was a teenager in Portugal before leaving to play for Manchester United.

"We need to keep believing in ourselves, we know we have a great chance".

'We are calm and we have to think about the next game. The referee sent the decision for video review and after about a long one minute, the goal was disallowed. Or go into the referee's ear and say "Hold on, there was a problem three phases back, that we need to have a look at", that to me was very odd. "We faced the European champions, a team that plays at a very high level, and we played equal to them".

"Hector Moreno's goal handed Mexican football a huge result", he said.

Fernando Santos threw on the highly-rated Andre Silva a minute later, and he almost restored Portugal's lead in the 84th minute but Ochoa produced a super save to keep out the striker's header.

Mexico's all-time leading scorer still had time before the end of the half to blaze over from a good position. There are two games to go and that's why we're cool, we're at ease. A tame Ronaldo free kick bounced off the wall, and Joao Moutinho played the ball back into the mixer.

Prosecutors lodged a complaint at a Spanish court this month in which Ronaldo is accused of defrauding the Spanish treasury of EUR14.7million in tax owed on image rights.

The ball was then lifted back into the box and eventually found defender Pepe, who's strike crept in at the far post.

The Besiktas winger drew Mexico's goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and tapped home the opening goal. A defensive error allowed Carlos Vela to get on the ball, and his hooked cross was headed in.

The CONCACAF champions faced a tough task breaking down Portugal squad as the match remained deadlocked.

Mexicos Héctor Moreno, marked by Portugals No6, José Fonte, directs his header off the inside of the post and in during injury-time.

El Tri, winners of the tournament in 1999, were roused from their stupor and responded, with Hernandez aka Chicharito diving to head home Vela's cross three minutes from half-time, after Portugal had made a mess of a routine clearance.
