Oscar sparks mass brawl in Chinese league

As punches were thrown, some SIPG players - including fellow Brazilian teammate Hulk, ran over to protect Oscar.

Brazilian superstar and Shanghai SIPG player Oscar got into a massive brawl with Guangzhou R&F opponents this weekend during a Chinese Super League game.

The incident came in first-half injury time during Guangzhou R&F's 1-1 draw with Shanghai SIPG, shortly after Hulk had equalised for the away side, who are managed by former Tottenham and Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas.

After the former Chelsea midfielder appeared to fire the ball deliberately twice at Guangzhou players, he was rushed by several opponents, fell to the ground and a melee broke out.

When the ball bounced back to him he smashed it again in the opposite direction - hitting the midriff of another Guangzhou player.

Oscar was subsequently pushed to the ground by R&F's Chen Zhizhao, sparking a tussle that brought all 22 players plus substitutes and officials onto the field.

When order was restored after pushing and shoving, R&F's Li Tixiang and Shanghai's Fu Huan were dismissed and three others were booked.

Oscar was unhurt and the fiery encounter finished 1-1 to leave Villas-Boas' side four points behind reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande. "I am a very dedicated player and respect sportsmanship", Sina Sports website quoted Oscar.

The playmaker's actions appeared deliberate as he booted the ball at players on the halfway line.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
