North Korea accused the United States on Sunday of "mugging" its delegation carrying a diplomatic package in NY, as tensions between the two countries soar.
North Korea has accused the U.S. authorities of "literally mugging" its diplomats at a NY airport.
A spokesman for the hermit kingdom's Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the U.S. of forcibly seizing a "diplomatic package in "an illegal and heinous act of provocation".
The spokesman also branded the action as "a planned and organized provocation" and "an intolerable act of infringement upon the sovereignty of the DPRK", warning that the United States should "be fully aware of the grave consequences to follow".
It added that the ministry also asked the worldwide community to "seriously reconsider" NY as a venue for major global events. "This clearly shows that the USA is a felonious and lawless gangster state".
According to the KCNA report on the incident, over 20 officials, who claimed to be with the US Department of Homeland Security and police, "made a violent assault like gangsters to take away the diplomatic package from the diplomats".
North Korea did not detail the contents of the package.
Upon returning to the U.S., Mr. Warmbier was suffering from severe brain damage, indicating he may have been tortured while in North Korean custody.
Neither the White House or DHS has commented on the alleged incident.
The spokesman, who was not named as per usual KCNA practice, said North Korea "regards this mugging by the USA as an intolerable act of infringement upon the sovereignty" of its country, and demanded an explanation and an apology.
North Korea's statement came amid the latest tensions between the two archenemies, which occurred following Pyongyang's release of American student Otto Warmbier, whose parents said he was in a coma after being held by the Far East Asian country for the past 17 months.
"As the diplomats vigorously resisted, they [US authorities] grabbed the diplomatic package using physical violence and made off", said the spokesperson, who did not disclose the contents of the diplomatic package.
