Diana Taurasi breaks WNBA career scoring record

Taurasi is back for the Phoenix Mercury after sitting out a year ago to rest. "She could be arguably the best ever in the league, and she's a champion".

Parker scored eight early points to help the Sparks outscore the Mercury 15-0 over the first 2:25.

It took Taurasi 13 seasons in the league to reach the mark, while it took Thompson - who set the record in 2010 -17 seasons.

Social media erupted with love, appreciation and admiration for the incredible career that Taurasi has had. Taurasi left the game moments later after being assessed a technical foul.

Diana Taurasi has a pretty big night ahead of her.

Taurasi scored 15 points against the Sky, and is just 14 points shy of passing the 7,488 points Tina Thompson had from 1997-2013.

"I've played a lot of basketball in the streets of Los Angeles. this is where I fell in love with the game", she said. The Phoenix Mercury are 6-4 and fifth in the WNBA.

Nneka Ogwumike had 18 points and seven rebounds for Los Angeles (8-3), which has won four in a row and six of its last seven. She led the Mercury to a 99-91 victory against the Chicago Sky with 37 points and eight three-pointers, which moved her into second place on the all-time scoring list and gave her the record for most triples in a career.

The Sparks will hit the road for games at Indiana (Saturday), Connecticut (June 27) and Atlanta (June 30) over the next two weeks before returning to the Staples Center on July2 against the Mystics.
