Cristiano Ronaldo thinking only of Confederations Cup: Andre Silva

Cristiano Ronaldo could not inspire Portugal to victory on their Confederations Cup debut as they drew 2-2 with Mexico on Sunday thanks to Hector Moreno's late goal.

Ronaldo was also involved in one of the game's biggest talking points, a "goal" that was disallowed after consultation with the Video Assistant Referees.

Former Manchester United striker, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez however equalised for Mexico in the 42nd minute with a diving header.

Southampton full-back Cedric Soares thought he had won it for Portugal when he scored on 86 minutes, only for Moreno to earn a point for El Tri late on.

Cristiano Ronaldo was kept out of the media spotlight in the wake of Portugal's 2-2 Confederations Cup draw on Saturday.

Both teams are trailing hosts Russian Federation in Group A, who beat New Zealand 2-0 in the tournament opener on Saturday. New Zealand is at the bottom of the group with no points.

But those who watch the Mexico vs. Portugal match may not see the end of the line for either team.

KAZAN, Russia (AP) - Portugal had a first-half goal against Mexico chalked off in the Confederations Cup after the action was reviewed on video.

The reminder from this game, yet again, was that Portugal remain reliant on Ronaldo to an unhealthy degree.

"Ronaldo is motivated", young Portugal forward Andre Silva said. "It was a great result for Mexican football". I think the superiority of the Portuguese team is visible even with the naked eye.

Germany is the top-ranked team in the eight-nation Confederations Cup, at No 3, but it came to Russian Federation with a second-string squad that has only three players from the team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Quaresma had an opportunity to get his second of the game and win it for his team with 10 minutes to go, set up for an acrobatic effort by Ronaldo only to shoot straight at the 'keeper. With the Mexico back three having all been dragged to the Portugal captain, Quaresma had an easy task to side-step Guillermo Ochoa and score.

"The result was fair as Mexico also played well".

In a press conference dominated by questions on Ronaldo, Santos eventually refused to discuss the subject further but defended his player's character.

Mexico's all-time top scorer grabbed his 48th worldwide goal from 93 appearances after some terrible defending by Portugal. Santos has been attempting to phase in a new generation of players but it was a slight surprise to see newly signed AC Milan striker Andre Silva, who has made such a successful start to his global career, limited to a cameo off the bench, during which time he forced Guillermo Ochoa into a fine save.

"We played the European champions on equal terms, we generated chances but couldn't finish them", said Osorio.
