Trump appears to criticize Rosenstein in tweet

Shortly before Rosenstein's statement, The Washington Post reported that Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the Trump-Russia affair, had begun investigating Jared Kushner's business dealings.

Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein submitted a widely circulated memo to the president last month raising concerns over Mr Comey's performance, but Mr Trump later said he had already made the decision to fire Mr Comey.

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations - under investigation both by Congress and the FBI - that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favor, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.

The probe Mueller "marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin", The Washington Post reported yesterday.

In the past few weeks, President Trump has labeled the ongoing investigations about his administration's possible connections with Russian Federation as a baseless "witch hunt".

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", she said in a statement released Friday.

President Donald Trump is telling his Twitter followers that they are witnessing the "single greatest WITCH HUNT in American history". Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller on May 17 as special counsel to head the inquiry into the Russian Federation matter.

President Trump can not directly fire the special counsel.

It is also reported that Trump has been asked not to publish anything regarding Russian Federation investigation and to curtail his social media postings.

Trump relies heavily in social media outlets, twitter in particular, to communicate directly with his followers across the country.

"Today the President of the United States confirmed he's under criminal investigation". An official of Trump's transition confirmed the laywer's internal order sent Thursday.

He also said it would be up to Mr Mueller to decide whether Mr Trump's action amounted to obstruction of justice, an act that could be cited in any effort in the Republican-led Congress to impeach him and remove him from office.

The Post reported that Mueller and his team are interviewing senior intelligence officials about Trump's role, including Dan Coats, director of national intelligence; Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency; and Richard Ledgett, who recently left his role as Rogers' deputy.

Whatever is going on, it's clear that Trump is trying to rally his supporters against both Mueller and Rosenstein. The FBI is also looking into the financial activity of Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, and Carter Page, the Post says, and all of them have been cut loose from team Trump.

Trump also compared his position to the investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server in another tweet. Trump initially used that memo along with a recommendation from Sessions to justify firing Comey.

"His concern was, because we're looking at the potential - again, that's the subject of the investigation - coordination between the campaign and Russian Federation, because it was President Trump - President-elect Trump's campaign, this person's view was, inevitably, his behavior, his conduct will fall within the scope of that work", Comey said.
