Shot congressman Steve Scalise off the critical list

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding.

Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center where Scalise was taken, said several operations have managed to control the bleeding.

The congressional baseball game will be played at Nationals Park Thursday night, just a day after Rep. Steve Scalise was shot and critically injured in Virginia.

The shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, was fatally shot in a firefight with police.

According to the doctors, the main concern for Scalise at this point is making sure he does not have an infection.

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

Suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth. He has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery. The story continued into Thursday as both congressional baseball teams insisted that the long-running charity game should go on as scheduled.

The practice was being held ahead of the annual Congressional Baseball Game, which raises money for charity.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

Sava said that, while Scalise remains in critical condition, his risk of death is substantially lower now than when he came in.

Scalise's doctors estimate the congressman will be recovering in the hospital for the next couple of weeks.

President Trump issued a brief taped statement, where he thanked and prayed for the U.S. Capitol Police for their actions that saved lives, along with the Alexandria, Police, Fire, and Rescue teams that responded to the active shooting call.

"We've had a very, very divided country for many years", Trump said.

His family said they appreciate the support they've received from lawmakers and the president, and are thankful for the bravery of the special agents.
