Manchester United 'told versatile Tottenham star Eric Dier will cost £50m'

The England global is on the list of targets that Mourinho has given to vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who has so far landed Victor Lindelof the Benfica defender for £30.75 million.

After falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho, Smalling made only 36 appearances in all competitions last season, 20 less than the season prior, and as a result the 27-year-old is reportedly prepared to take his football elsewhere.

The Telegraph is reporting that Jose Mourinho sees the England global as the long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, who himself made the journey from White Hart Lane to Old Trafford in 2006.

Manchester United have been given hope of signing Eric Dier, believing they can offer him two things Tottenham can't.

Mourinho is also ready to offer Dier the chance to establish himself as a holding midfielder at Old Trafford so the lure of playing in his preferred position will be a tempting prospect for him.

However manager Mauricio Pochettino will not want to listen to bids for a player who has been crucial in successive second place Premier League finishes for Spurs.

However, West Brom and Leicester are unlikely to be Smalling's only potential suitors, as Tottenham are also reported to have interest in the centre back, along with a number of Premier League clubs. He may not be the most glamorous of signings, but the England global is a ready-made player that could provide strong competition at Spurs.
