A four-time victor on the PGA Tour, Thomas was simply pleased to be in contention after his tremendous round.
Honest, this really is the U.S. Open.
Casey and other early starters were greeted by more challenging conditions than those they faced in the opening round as winds picked up around the links-style layout making the longest course in U.S. Open history play even longer.
Fleetwood's second shot on the par-five 18th finished just 47 yards from the pin. His most recent top-10 was T7 at the Dean & Deluca Invitational.
Johnson bogeyed the ninth and got the shot back at the 12th, but bogeys at the next two holes dropped him back to three over and another dropped shot at the 17th sealed his fate. Masters champion Sergio Garcia returned a tidy one-under 71 to leave the Spaniard four back and in contention for a second straight major. His seven-under-par tied the record to par for the first round of a US Open held by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf, who each shot seven-under 63 at Baltusrol in 1980. He has birdied three of his last four holes.
With the past six majors going to players who have never won a major before, there is a good chance that run could be extended this weekend.
"Those were tough shots", Fleetwood said.
At Erin Hills, all Johnson could do was go down swinging on a Friday. McIlroy played in the same group with Day, who had a 7-over 79 on Thursday and followed with a 75 to finish at 10 over. There have been no reports yet of anyone getting sick.
Rory McIlroy plays his shot from the 13th tee during the second round of the US Open on Friday.
Next up is a weekend without most of the biggest names in golf.
But Thomas was more focused on the 63 than the par record for the Open.
Johnson was hitting it so well that he appeared to be safe even when he was on the cut line. Putting kept me in it early on and then I started hitting it great from seven onwards. He shot 73 and missed the cut by three.
"I'll take exactly where I'm at", Fowler said. I couldn't possibly shoot any higher than I did. It's just been trying to figure it out on and around the greens. McIlroy came to life when it was far too late.
Paul Casey is one of the joint leaders after an up and down round of one under par, he took an eight on the par-5 14, but bounced back brilliantly with 5 birdies in his last 11 holes to save his round.
McIlroy and Day needed low rounds to have any chance of advancing to the weekendm and neither was able to produce anything near what was necessary. "But we did a good job staying within ourselves and let it come to us".
"Guess what?" he said to his 4-year-old son.
And with the tees moved up on the 15th hole to make it reachable, Thomas hit a 3-wood that rolled off the back slope of the green to 6 feet.
But the Englishman recovered magnificently with five straight birdies from the 17th, and a 71 left him sharing the lead.
"Not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an 8 on the card, but I'm a pretty happy, man, " Casey said.
