Lawyer says Trump not under investigation

His solution? Trump was merely responding to a "fake news" Washington Post story, and besides, tweets don't allow for nuance.

"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

"The president is not under investigation by the special counsel", Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal team, told NBC's "Meet the Press".

A member of Donald Trump's legal team has denied the United States president's own assertion that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice.

He continued, "Let me be clear here, as it has since the beginning, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction".

It was reported this week the president is increasingly angry over the investigation, with advisers and confidants saying Trump frequently yells at television sets in the White House carrying coverage.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein soon named Robert Mueller to take over the Russian Federation investigation and reportedly is now looking into whether Trump tried to obstruct justice for pressuring investigators.

Constitutional scholars have debated the question for years, though the Justice Department has said in formal opinions written under former presidents Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon that the Constitution bars a sitting president from facing legal indictment.

"No, Chris, I deal with fact and law", Sekulow said.

Sekulow's interviews on Sunday morning came after Trump appeared to acknowledge for the first time Friday that he is under federal investigation as part of the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.

The top Democrat on the House intelligence committee says the panel is looking forward to getting a response from the White House this week as to whether President Donald Trump has tapes of private conversations with fired FBI Director James Comey.

But Sekulow became defensive when he pressed on the issue after he told Fox that Trump was "being investigated for taking the action that the attorney general and deputy attorney general recommending him to take". "You just said, sir, you just said that he's being investigated". "It's that simple. The president is not under investigation".

Trump has denied making these comments, which Comey said he documented in contemporaneous memos.

"I just gave you the legal theory of how the constitution works", Sekulow said.

Sekulow noted Trump had gotten assurances from Comey that he was not under investigation in the broader investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

"We're in agreement then", Wallace said.

"I will leave it there", said Todd, ending the segment.

"It was 141 characters".
