Killing of 6 cops an act of 'cowardice': Jaitley

"There are no reports of any casualty", a police source said.

The militants fired some shots at the army vehicles in Bijbehara area and fled from the spot, a police official said. On Friday evening, a police contingent, on patrol in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, was ambushed by a heavily-armed group of terrorists. The dead bodies were identified as Nasir Wani and Aadil Mushtaq Mir. Both had joined militancy after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen poster boy Burhan Wani past year. "He was also involved in attack on police party in Anantnag town previous year in which two policemen were killed", the police spokesman said. Mattoo had joined militant ranks in 2015 and was made Lashkar district commander after the killing of Majid Zarger.

Funeral of commander Junaid Mattoo held at his ancestral village in Khudwani of Qaimoh tehsil of Anantnag district.

Police had laid a cordon around a house in Malik Mohalla in Arwani village at 8 am on Friday following an intelligence tip off about the presence of three militants there.

The statement added that JKLF delegations visited Raidwani Kulgam and Bandipora and participated in the funeral prayers and condolence meetings of Junaid Matto, Mohammad Ashraf and Naseer Ahmad Sheikh. Militants also appeared in the funerals of two militants and fired some rounds in air. The attacks that took place at Achabal in Anantnag district of South Kashmir showed a risky trend of attacking not just the army but local police officials in the valley.

The bodies of the militants were spotted in the debris in the morning.

He said police and paramilitary personnel were also deployed in strength in other sensitive and vulnerable areas of the Valley to prevent people from taking to roads, staging protests and pelting stones on security personnel.

He said militants involved in killing of six policemen including SHO at Achabal area of Anantnag district yesterday would be tracked and brought to book.

By late afternoon, firing had stopped but two houses had caught fire during the encounter.
