Trump is accused of firing FBI director James Comey over his refusal to steer the Russian Federation investigation away from former national security advisor and Trump ally Mike Flynn. "And if President Trump were to fire Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein, and then [get] special counsel Mueller fired, I believe Congress would begin impeachment proceedings".
"It certainly sounds like the president is adding Rod Rosenstein to the enemy's list along with Bob Mueller and James Comey and an ever increasing number of people", Sen.
Rosenstein's selection of Mueller puts the probe in the special counsel's hands, but it would still fall to Rosenstein to make decisions about resources, staffing and, ultimately, prosecutions, ABC News pointed out.
A White House spokeswoman referred all questions to Trump's outside lawyer, who made no on-the-record statements.
The somewhat vague tweet seems to refer to Rosenstein, who wrote a memo outlining an argument against former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James B. Comey. He said this week he had not found reason to do so - making the statement in the days after Trump's friends raised the possibility that the president himself was thinking of "terminating" Mueller.
In his statement, Comey said Trump asked him to drop the investigation into ties between former national security advisor Mike Flynn and Russian Federation.
Mueller's team has also invited other intelligence officials to give their testimonies so the special counsel could rule if there is a solid case against Trump. If Trump fired Rosenstein, Brand might resign because she and Rosenstein were nominated together, have a close working relationship and went through their confirmation hearings as a team.
Intially, the Trump administration pointed to that memo to justify Comey's firing.
President Trump appeared to confirm he is under federal investigation in the ongoing Russian Federation probe as he yet again blasted the political "witch hunt" and insisted no evidence exists he colluded with the former Cold War adversary.
If Trump's goal is to limit Mueller's probe or force him out, Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona said this week, "that would be disastrous for him".
The memo says former transition team members "have a duty to preserve any physical and electronic records that may be related in any way to the subject matter of the pending investigations".
Mueller has also broadened his scope to include the scrutinizing of financial activities of Trump associates, reportedly based on hunches about possible bribery and money-laundering.
Vice-President Mike Pence on Thursday hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe. Pence headed the Trump transition until Inauguration Day.
"Why is that Hillary Clinton's family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked.
"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people".
