Doctor says Rep. Scalise's vital signs stable

Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a Republican congressional baseball practice. "It went across the pelvis, causing fracturing of the bone and causing damage to internal organs".

Scalise is sedated, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.

When the Representative entered MedStar Washington Hospital after a mass shooting at a Congressional baseball practice, his surgeon said, he was "as critical as he could be".

The update comes just one day after a doctor told reporters here that Scalise is not only expected to walk again but "hopefully run" some time after he is released from the hospital.

Mr Scalise remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, but his risk of death is "substantially lower than when he came in", Mr Sava said.

"The positive thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement from across the nation have meant the world to Matt and to all of us", Mika's family said in the statement. But Democrats and Republicans recognized that what happened to Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, the third-ranking member in the House, could happen to anyone in public life.

U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), who visited Scalise in the hospital Thursday, said that on a recent foreign trip he and Scalise took, 90 percent of their conversations were about the game.

James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Illinois, was shot dead by police after opening fire in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday. Hodgkinson was shot by police and later died of his injuries.

"I like to say it's my job to be pessimistic and so if you accuse me of being optimistic I feel bad about that", Sava said. The team doesn't plan on removing them all soon: The Congressman has already undergone multiple surgeries in the last 36 hours.

Typically, the Republicans and Democrats wear jerseys from their home state teams to the annual charity game, but the demonstration of love for Louisiana, organized by staff from Rep. Roger Marshall's office, is also a show of unity among the parties so often in opposition. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful". He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding.

She says she's grateful to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and all of Scalise's Capitol Hill colleagues "who have reached out to us during this most challenging time".
