House Majority Whip Steve Scalise listens during an interview in NY on October 8, 2014. A congressional women's softball team practiced Thursday morning in Alexandria but with a heavy police presence.
His risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and "I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said. Steve Scalise is "showing signs of improvement" after undergoing a third surgery Saturday (June 17), according to an update issued by the hospital treating him for a gunshot wound.
Members of the US Congress took part in the traditional Republicans vs Democrats baseball game on Thursday, with many wearing hats to honour Steve Scalise, the congressman who was critically wounded by a gunman as his team practised a day before. He was shot only once, but the high-powered-rifle round traveled from his left hip across his pelvis and shattered when it struck bone. Sava didn't address what organs were damaged.
Scalise, R-La., was shot in the attack Wednesday morning at a baseball park in the D.C. suburb of Alexandria, Va.
Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".
He said that "there are hundreds of fragments" of the bullet still in Scalise's body, but that there is more risk associated with finding them than there is benefit of taking them out of him.
Speaking today from the White House, President Trump said Scalise's condition- initially announced as "stable" - was "much more hard that people even thought at the time". While the congressman was awake on the baseball field, by the time he was transported to the hospital, he was in shock and immediately received units of transfused blood.
The president says that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".
Trump and First Lady Melania visited Scalise's family - as well as that of wounded officer Crystal Griner, who is also at MedStar Hospital- last night.
Scalise remains in critical condition at a hospital near the Capitol and has undergone multiple surgeries.
The president made his comments as he spoke in Miami to announce a new policy on Cuba.
Unity after the shooting was the primary theme of the evening, as the AP noted a mention of Scalise from the announcer led to a standing ovation from those thousands of fans.
