Bipartisan Love is On Deck for Congressional Baseball Game

This year's Congressional Baseball Game is expected to raise over $1 million following a shooting that targeted Republican lawmakers Wednesday morning.

Before the event, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters, "Tonight we will go to the game, play our hardest, but we will all be Team Scalise". Three others were injured by the gunfire from suspected shooter James Hodgkinson, who was killed by police.

U.S. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise speaks to the media after a meeting at Trump Tower on December 12, 2016, in New York City.

Top US Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise remains hospitalised in critical condition after being shot this week but he has improved, his surgeon said Friday as he expressed optimism about the legislator's prospects for recovery.

Investigators said Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers, and Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media. Officers in Scalise's protective detail engaged the shooter, and their swift action has been praised for saving lives. His white van, parkedat the YMCA gym beside the practice field, was searched; his cellphone, computer and camera were recovered.

This person was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The game Thursday, a Washington tradition since 1909 in which Republicans and play Democrats, went on Thursday evening at Nationals Stadium, home of the city's major league baseball team.

So Young Pak, director of media relations at MedStar Washington Hospital Center where Scalise is being treated, gave no additional details about his condition. Predicting Scalise's length of stay at the hospital is "difficult", Sava acknowledged.

Before the shooting, Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., said he had asked Ryan about increasing budgets for members' offices so they can pay for more security.

But, early Wednesday, we learned that a deranged man, intent on killing as many Republicans as possible, walked onto an Alexandria baseball field and began firing wildly at GOP members of Congress who were practicing for an annual charity baseball game.

Gun control initiatives at the federal level have been so stymied by special interests in recent years that Democrats in Congress remained largely mute, the New York Times reports. He is the House's No. 3 GOP leader. Trump visited the Louisiana congressman at the hospital Wednesday night, and Vice President Mike Pence paid a visit Thursday morning. "He's going to be OK".

The game is being held less than 48 hours after members of the Republican congressional baseball team were attacked by a rifle-wielding gunman during a practice in Alexandria.

Capitol Police officer David Bailey, who was injured in Wednesday's attack, throws the first pitch.

Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch. They never looked back, winning the seven-inning game, 11-2. The Capitol's usual partisan combativeness, though not absent, was less pointed than usual, and warm words were exchanged between some lawmakers with starkly opposing political philosophies. "All you're doing is stirring up more trouble" by making another incision larger than the fragment to try to get it out, explained Dr. Deborah Stein, trauma chief at the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center.
