5 things to watch for on Sunday at the US Open

Also missing the weekend were No. 2 Rory McIlroy and No. 3 Jason Day, who played together for the first two rounds to disastrous results. Open lead after making three bogeys in a row late in the second round, put himself back in the thick of the chase with a run of three birdies on Saturday at the U.S. Open.

He three-putted on No. 13.

He gave back a stroke on No. 4 when his drive went into the right fescue and his second shot was over the green. "I'd love to have another one of those", said Thomas, who posted at 11-under 205. "Today they had how many shoot in the 60s?" There were 32 sub-par rounds, a record for U.S. Open third rounds.

TELEVISION: Saturday, 11 a.m.to 8 p.m. FOX.

It was McIlroy's first tournament since taking time off to tend to a recurring rib injury.

Day at least managed to find one positive spin.

The 24-year-old Louisville native is not new to success.

On that occasion, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Hale Irwin and Ray Floyd shared the halfway lead, with Irwin going on to win the "Massacre at Winged Foot" on seven over par.

So yeah, outside of Fowler, we're left with a lack of star power, and the top of the leaderboard is completely devoid of anyone who's actually won a major.

He shot 75 and missed the cut.

He never would have guessed it. "Unfortunately this didn't pan out".

It didn't for McIlroy, either.

Also playing in the afternoon was Dustin Johnson, the defending champion and No. 1 player in the world, who opened with a 75. "And secondly, Erin Hills isn't exactly Oakmont". If only he had hit the fairways. He will now be focusing on trying to control his nerves as he heads into the business end of what has been a remarkable second major of 2017 thus far. And even that was frustrating.

Thomas started his record round with birdies on the first two holes.

"Showed up for the last six holes, anyway", he said.

McIlroy dismissed the notion of being rusty before the tournament, but conceded on his way out of Wisconsin that he hasn't played almost enough.

Casey's five birdies were one short of the U.S. Open record last matched the day before by Adam Hadwin.

Speaking after a nervy ending to his round which ended with a vital bogey putt, Fleetwood added: "It was uncharted territory for me, leading a major but from the minute I teed off I felt comfortable in my swing".

"I could not have hit that three-wood to the last (from 299 yards) any better if I tried, just a little high cut and I was very fortunate for the overnight rain for the ball to stay there".

His schedule will pick up immediately.

Day thought his game was perfectly suited for Erin Hills. Here if you can hit it long and straight, it's a great advantage. Miller said via phone as he was headed to Utah for Father's Day.

Justin Thomas managed to stand out in a U.S. Open where par is going out of style. But I think with how long the course is and how long the days are, I'm not sure. The experience of building on an opening-round 59 will help, he said. "The execution was not there". A two-time victor on tour, he planned to spend Saturday night with his family and worry about Sunday on Sunday. He won't play again until the British Open.

"I'm playing the weekend".
