US Congress baseball game brings unity after shooting of Republican Steve Scalise

The hospital said earlier in the week that he had undergone surgery for internal injuries and a broken leg.

In the statement, Scalise thanks Capitol Police officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner, who shot the suspected gunman despite both being injured themselves.

For the game, which began in 1909, members of the Senate and House of Representatives donned uniforms representing teams from their constituencies for the game and many topped them with hats from Louisiana State University, Mr Scalise's alma mater, as a tribute.

"It's been more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said after leaving MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, says several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized. The former congressional staffer is now a lobbyist for Tyson Foods.

A shooting on Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, has brought a flood of prayers from politicians and communities who are united in faith following the attack.

The game went ahead as scheduled Thursday, in an emotional display of bipartisan unity.

The attack occurred as GOP members practiced for an annual charity baseball between members of Congress.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an "imminent risk of death" and was "as critical as you can be", doctors also said.

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen visited Scalise in the hospital Thursday morning, and in remarks at an event in Miami Thursday afternoon Pence called Scalise "a good man" and "a patriot".

Griner, Bailey and a third officer, Henry Cabrera, engaged the gunman nearly immediately, and Alexandria Police officers quickly added support upon arriving at the scene, eventually fatally wounding the alleged gunman, identified by federal law enforcement sources to CNN as James Hodgkinson.

The 66-year-old suspect from Belleville, Illinois, was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign but whether he was politically motivated is still unclear, investigators said.

"I am a sponsor of a law that would change that and would say if you have a hide carry permit in any state you can carry in other states", he said.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that the president would not attend because of security concerns.

After the suspect fired a few more shots, "we knew what it was", Flake said.

The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was added to the list of charities that will receive money raised by the game in honour of two members of Mr Scalise'€™s security detail who were at the Wednesday practise session and returned fire.

And there were others who said it's time for people of different political persuasions to come together.
