Trump Under Investigation For Possible "Obstruction Of Justice"

In a series of statements on Twitter Thursday, Trump called special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 campaign a "WITCH HUNT" based on the "phony" premise of possible collusion between Russia and a cadre of Trump campaign associates. "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Mueller is also probing whether Trump himself obstructed justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey on May 9, according to the Washington Post.

Before he was sacked, Comey was overseeing the investigation into whether members of Trump's campaign team participated in Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller's investigators have asked for information and will talk to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

"I'm going to acknowledge we had a meeting with the special counsel Mueller, but I'm not going to get into the contents", Mr Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told reporters later.

Comey testified before the Senate intelligence committee last week and confirmed that he gave Mueller the memos he wrote detailing his interactions with Trump ahead of his firing.

"Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump's life and his associates lives", said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who labeled it "very unsafe".

Comey also testified he had told Trump he was not under investigation prior to his dismissal.

After it was revealed that Mueller's inquiry would include looking at potential malfeasance on Trump's part, Gingrich decided that Mueller is actually "the tip of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency", and that Mueller is "the anti-Trump special counsel".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation probe in early March, making Rosentein the person to appoint Mueller.

On Wednesday night, a spokesman for Trump's lawyer did not refute the notion that Trump was under examination but decried what he said were leaks that led to the story.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she is concerned that Trump might try to fire both Rosenstein and Mueller.

In response to the statement, former US Attorney Preet Bharara, whom Trump fired in March, tweeted early Friday morning that "Americans should also exercise caution before accepting as true lies about firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director & defamation of a war hero special counsel", references to criticisms Trump has levied against Mueller and James Comey.

"In the three-plus years that I have been the director of the National Security Agency, to the best of my recollection, I have never been directed to do anything I believed to be illegal, immoral, unethical or inappropriate", Rogers said.

Friday's tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses by the president after a report by The Washington Post that Mueller was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.

President Donald Trump says the economy is improving and job numbers are up, despite the "phony Witch Hunt" against him.
