Tigers' Victor Martinez hospitalized with irregular heartbeat

Martinez made an early exit from Thursday's game against the Rays after experiencing cold sweats, dizziness, and an elevated heart rate.

The Tigers designated hitter, who went on the 10-day DL Friday, will remain in Detroit for monitoring over the next week to 10 days, according to the MLive Media Group.

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez (41) at bat against the Kansas City Royals during the fourth inning at Kauffman Stadium.

Catcher John Hicks was called up from the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens to take Martinez's roster spot.

He drilled 27 home runs a year ago and gives the Tigers another power threat in the order alongside the likes of Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez. The Tigers expect further information on Saturday.

The Tigers should be able to hold down the fort in Martinez's absence, but it is clearly frightening to hear that a player has been hospitalized, and hopefully he can recover soon.
