Steve Scalise remains in critical condition, undergoes third surgery

"He's a great fighter, and he's going to be okay, we hope".

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said solemnly at the White House. "The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

Cassidy said Scalise was shot in an area packed with blood vessels, in addition to bone and internal organs. Though the game pegs Republicans against Democrats, attendees and participating lawmakers showed unity in wake of the shooting.

Scalise was one of five people wounded Wednesday morning when a shooter opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., one day before the annual Congressional Baseball Game for charity.

He commented that Scalise's tragedy may have brought some unity to the partisan climate in the country. Also wounded were a lobbyist and congressional aide. The shooter later died from his injuries.

"I am proud to live in a country where expressing a strong opinion is a right, and one that I exercise regularly", Congressman Tim Ryan, who plays shortstop for the Democratic congressional baseball team, told CNN.

As his colleagues played baseball in his honor Thursday evening, MedStar Washington Hospital Center medical gave an update on Rep. Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition but has improved.

The game, first established in 1909, will be hosted at Nationals Park - just down the road from Capitol Hill. More than $1 million has been raised for Congressional Sports for Charity so far, the game's organizers announced. This year proceeds will also go to the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
