Scalise still critical, but expected to recover: Doctor

U.S. representative Steve Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, has shown improvement in the past 36 hours after being shot by a man who opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a baseball practice earlier in the week, his lead surgeon said on Friday.

Investigators say he shot House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was killed by police who had been guarding the congressman.

"We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country", he said.

The congressman is still in critical condition in the ICU, but his doctors are staying optimistic. He died later from injuries sustained in a shootout with police.

Scalise had two surgeries Wednesday after being shot in the hip by 66-year-old James Hodgkinson who was then killed by Capitol police.

Republican members of Congress played their Democratic colleagues in a charity game on Thursday night at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team, with thousands of spectators attending.

Vice President Mike Pence has visited the Washington hospital and "checked in" on a Louisiana congressman recovering from a gunshot wound.

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, sent a video message that played at the start of the game.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events".

Authorities also confirm Hodgkinson legally purchased a 9 mm handgun and an assault-style rifle from licensed firearms sellers.
