Hospital updates Rep. Scalise's condition while colleagues honor him at baseball game

Democratic team manager, Mike Doyle, a House member from Pennsylvania, said on Bloomberg Television that normally 8,000 to 9,000 tickets are sold.

"Not here, but in our thoughts and prayers, Steve Scalise", said the announcer before the game. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., who plays in the Congressional Women's Softball Game.

"We are, as ever, awed by the tremendous bravery of the Capitol Police", Ryan said, according to USA Today.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) leaves during the House vote on continuing a resolution on a budget on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., April 28, 2017. Other members of Congress are not afforded the same security as congressional leaders.

Proceedings were canceled for the day in the House, and instead Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California issued their own calls for unity.

In an emotional interview with CNN's Brooke Baldwin, Republican Rep. Rodney Davis and his wife recalled the horror of Wednesday's shooting at a congressional baseball practice.

Trump said the universal support for Scalise and others wounded in the shooting might help heal the country's many political differences.

He was struck by the fact that the attacker was armed with a rifle while the police officers only had pistols. "They ran right into those guns and the bullets, and they saved a lot of lives. We are all praying for those who are attacked and for their families", he said.

Republican Rep. Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee scored in the first inning, enjoying a different sort of adrenaline than the one he experienced Wednesday when he passed by the shooter over bloodied ground to take shelter in a dugout - confessing later that "the fear factor was horrific".

Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., is among lawmakers who have received death threats in recent months. He has reported them to Capitol police.

"Many, many members have reported the same thing", said MacArthur, who was influential in moving a health overhaul bill through the House. "But as you all know, tonight's game has taken on a much deeper level of meaning beyond that". He said some 15 officers attended a May town-hall meeting where many in the angry crowd blamed him for helping to revive the GOP's health care bill.

On Thursday night, the Texas congressman said to look for him along the third-base line, doing his best to coach Republicans to a tie-breaking victory.

Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the Democrats' star pitcher, said he and Scalise are close friends and work together on many local issues, but there's an intense rivalry on the baseball field. That's about twice much as the event raised past year.

"I think he meant he supported the same policy ideas as David Duke, but he wasn't David Duke, that he didn't have the same feelings about certain people as David Duke did", she explained.

Currently, the office allowance can not be used for home security. "We will provide periodic updates". Metropolitan Police also require that all firearms be registered with them.

But despite the applause, hugs and pledges of camaraderie, "there is definitely a somber mood", observed GOP congressman Steve Pearce, who was at the Republican practice when his colleague was shot.
