Greens at Erin Hills starting to firm up

Leishman is now sharing eighth place, only three shots back of co-leaders Rickie Fowler and England's Paul Casey at seven-under.

It is Day's first missed cut at the US Open - where he has had two runner-ups among five top-10s from seven starts - and his first weekend off at a major since the 2012 US PGA Championship.

"Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day are all out of the US Open 2017 at Erin Hills".

McIlroy will join Day at the US PGA Tour's Travelers Championship in CT next week.

The world No 2 hit just five of them to tie for last in the 156-man field in that category on day one, but still made four bogeys yesterday despite hitting 11 of 14 fairways.

The Northern Irishman had a one-under-par 71 in his second round on Friday but was five over par overall after a disastrous 78 in the first round.

Casey started eagle-birdie and finished with two birdies over the final four holes for his 66.

Needing a four-foot par putt to preserve par, Spieth missed and settled for bogey, which put him just one shot above the projected cut line of one-over.

Justin Rose, Davis Love IV, Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson and Graeme McDowell will not be in contention for the 117th US Open title.

"You don't get many rounds at the US Open that are stress-free", admitted Fowler afterwards.

"I couldn't get comfortable over the putter".

"I felt the most calm I have in a major in a long time this week", said Day, who arrived last Friday. "But at the end of the day, it is competitive golf rounds and getting a card in my hand that I have been missing".

"It doesn't need to be too much of a change for this golf course to play pretty hard", he said.

"It all started so well", McIlroy said.

"I played great", said the 44-year-old, who shot 80 when playing with eventual victor Johnson in the final round at Oakmont.

Every golfer knows that one shot at the end of a round can leave you with a better - or worse - taste in your mouth than you rightfully deserve.

The World No 2 was three over through 12 holes and to his credit birdied four of his closing six, but three bogeys in succession from his 10th hole hit him hard.

"I saw some positives on the back nine to take into next week and, even though this is disappointing, the last two rounds will serve me well in this busy summer".

"I'm playing the weekend".

Triple-bogeys have a way of sinking a round, but somehow that wasn't the situation for Paul Casey on Friday at the U.S. Open.

"It was a good display, all my own fault, of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course, which is what I did on 14", Casey said.

A rib injury restricted McIlroy to just six tournaments before the US Open, but he plans to play in next week's Travelers Championship and the Irish Open, Scottish Open and Open Championship in successive weeks in July.
