Fowler leads on day of subpars and sobs

Fowler leads by one shot from England's Paul Casey and lowly ranked American Xander Schauffele.

To which McIlroy replied: "That's why jack designed 100's of golf courses. and it's knew. mustn't have taught grammar in the 50's". You've got 156 of the best players in the world here.

Big hitters Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day were expected to thrive on the wide open fairways of Erin Hills.

Just like that, Casey is 4 over for the day and now five shots out of the lead.

"[It's] not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an eight on the card, but I'm a pretty happy man", said Casey. Obviously, I'm not here on the weekend, so it's unfortunate.

That's something Day, the No. 3 player in the world, rarely says at a major.

"Just really bad tee shots which led to obviously not being able to give myself many looks for birdies". "You're going to make some bogeys in there, so it's really hard to get away from anybody".

The tournament-leading foursome held a one-shot lead over a trio of contenders that includes first-round leader Rickie Fowler.

Playing the back nine first, Casey quickly joined American overnight leader Rickie Fowler at the top of the leaderboard at seven-under with an early birdie at the 11th.

"I played well enough to be contention at Erin Hills, let alone make the cut and it's disappointing".

This week marked his seventh U.S. Open; he'd never missed a cut, and counts five top-10 finishes.

New ground, in more ways than one, is being broken in this first staging of a US Open in the state of Wisconsin.

Despite some uncharacteristically low scoring for U.S. Open standards, Koepka reminded everyone that players still had their difficulties.

"It is always cool to be part of some sort of history in golf". "But I'd rather be remembered for something that's done on Sunday". McIlroy came to life when it was far too late. World number one Johnson becomes the ninth player to miss the cut having won the USGA's blue ribbon event 12 months previous. Fowler is at No. 9 in the world ranking. Besides his much improved putting, Hadwin credits his marriage and a change in attitude for his strong play this year.

Henrik Stenson. Alex Noren.

"Over the years, I've gotten a lot better managing that", Stricker said Friday.

"I lost a bit of skin out there", Casey said of the triple bogey. Erin Hills must have felt like another planet, not the same state. The pilot, the only one aboard the blimp operated by Florida-based AirSign, was being treated for injuries.

Fowler dropped to a share of fifth at six under, alongside compatriots Jamie Lovemark and JB Holmes (both 69).

On the golf course, there was only a barrage of birdies.

Three players - Brian Harman, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka - were in the clubhouse on five under, two back from Fowler.

But then, starting at 17, he reeled off five straight birdies with putts of 13 feet, 7, 3, 11 and 10.

"I couldn't have shot any higher", Johnson said.

The course was set up at 7,845 yards, the longest of any major. It was sporadic storms earlier in the week that has softened the greens. The speed of the greens seemed to pick up a foot maybe of speed.

Still to be determined is what kind of test Erin Hills can present the rest of the week, especially with more rain on the way Friday and Saturday afternoon.
