Bat-Signal lights up Los Angeles in tribute to Adam West

The public memorial came days after the death of the Batman legend, who died last week at the age of 88.

The ceremony was presided over by Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and police chief Charlie Beck, the latter of whom told the crowd, "I'm a real-life chief of police, and I can not tell you how many times I have wanted to turn on the Bat-signal". The symbol, flashed across the fictional skyline of Gotham city by police to summon the superhero, led fans of all stripes to a tribute event organized by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti.

"Like you, we all spent many hours in front of the TV, same bat time, same bat channel", Garcetti told the crowd.

After playing Batman on television, Adam West became more than just a mere actor.

Garcetti "nah-nah, nah-nah, nah-nah, nah-nah"-ed the night to a close, leading the crowd in the Batman theme song. We're here to celebrate him", said one fan sporting a Bat-signal T-shirt".

West's wife Marcelle was joined by their daughters, as well as actress Lee Meriwether, 82, who played Catwoman. Some wore Batman masks and others wore capes, T-shirts and hats adorned with the Batman TV logo.

"I grew up watching Adam West".

According to Entertainment Weekly, Fox will pay tribute to West by airing episode The Dating Game this Sunday (June 17) in the U.S., coupled with a dedication beforehand.
