Erlicht and Van Amburg both joined Sony Pictures Television in 2005 and oversaw the company's programming and production.
After dipping its toe into original programming only a week ago, Apple took the plunge Friday by hiring the TV execs behind "Better Call Saul", "Breaking Bad" and "The Blacklist". "We will bring that same intention to Apple's programming and we could not be more excited about what lies ahead". They said they plan to focus on "delighting customers" by bringing quality Apple programming.
Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks about the Apple TV during an event at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S. on March 21, 2016. "There may also be more key hires to come as Van Amburg and Erlicht staff up".
Apple began its move last week with reality program "Planet of the Apps", an unscripted show about developers competing for venture capital funding. They are already seeing their audiences diminish thanks to Netflix and Amazon's big TV push.
Apple seems to now understand that the public wants more than just short stories about musicians and could release content that is comparable to HBO's "Westworld" or Netflix's "Stranger Things", sources revealed. Carpool Karaoke: The Series was the mostly highly anticipated title, as it's an expanded version of James Corden's popular late night segment.
For years there were rumors that Apple was seeking to negotiate with programmers to create its own pay-TV service; an offering that would have paired nicely with the company's Apple TV hardware and app-based video interface. Apple, however, did not announce any specifics at this time.
