An early US Open departure for Day and McIlroy

The links-style layout, the longest course to stage a U.S. Open, had the most sub-par scores in a first round at the championship, while the one-over-par cut matched the record low previously set in 1990 at Medinah.

Brian Harman, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood are part of the four-way tie after each fired a 2-under 70.

Casey laid up in the rough, took two chops to get out of more rough behind the 14th green, and staggered away with a triple-bogey 8 that might have ruined his day at Erin Hills.

And the former Ryder Cup player then made it five birdies in succession - just one short of the US Open record equalled by Adam Hadwin on Thursday - by picking up shots on the first, second and third.

"Not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an eight on the card, but I'm a pretty happy man", said Casey afterwards. "Yeah, it was a bit of a roller coaster".

He recovered to drain a 13-foot birdie putt on the par-three 13th, but thereafter was unable to build any momentum over the remainder of the opening nine holes.

World number two Rory McIlroy has missed the cut at the US Open for the second year running.

Despite the issues, though, Fowler remains in contention for his first major championship. "And I've been very light on competitive rounds this year, and it's just a matter of getting into a good round of golf now".

Fowler shot a 73 and was still very much in the hunt at a second straight major.

Rickie Fowler has some company on top of the U.S. Open leaderboard. He'll head home to spend time with his son, River Jones Johnson, who was born Monday.

It was the first time since the official world rankings began in 1986 that the top three all missed the cut in a major.

"I would have snapped your arm off for six under", said the 39-year-old, who chipped in for an eagle on the first and added six birdies and two bogeys.

Rory McIlroy hit back at suggestions he was "bored" with golf after missing the cut in the US Open for the second year in succession. "The same plan, and get on the fairway, and be aggressive as you can, and take your par".

"It doesn't need to be too much of a change for this golf course to play pretty hard", he said.

McIlroy rallied with four birdies in his six closing holes but it was not enough to keep him in the tournament. 11, 12, 14, and 18, and then kept up his stellar play on the front, birdying holes 1, 2, and 7.

"I had been swinging it well and it felt really, really good a couple holes later to be picking the ball out of the hole for a birdie".

Brandt Snedeker, Players Championship victor Kim Si-woo, Xander Schauffele and amateur Cameron Champ are also two shots back at five under. Friday's round included five birdies and two bogeys. Over the final few holes, with Justin Rose struggling to try to make the cut and McIlroy finally playing well, Day was simply trying to stay out of the way.

"I just need get myself inside the cut line, because I'm assuming the USGA don't like to see seven under lead their championship (after round one)", Day said.
