Tyson employee hurt in Virginia baseball practice shooting

Among the five people shot this morning on an Alexandria, Virginia baseball field was a man with ties to mid-Michigan.

Scalise is recovering from emergency surgery after being shot in the hip. During his time as a staffer, he served as a legislative aide for Congressman Tim Walberg and as a legislative assistant to now-retired Michigan Congressman Dave Camp.

Mika graduated from Adrian College in 2001 and now is the director of government relations with Tyson Foods.

Mika wasn't scheduled to play in Thursday night's game but was helping to coach the players with batting practice when the shooting began shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday. The statement went on to say he is undergoing surgery at a Washington D.C. area hospital.

"We have confirmed that Matt Mika, director-government relations for our Washington, D.C. office, is among those who was shot this morning in Alexandria", Gary Mickelson, a Tyson spokesman, said in a statement.

His family has said baseball is Mika's passion.

The Republican congressional baseball team was practicing on a suburban Virginia field Wednesday when James T. Hodgkinson of IL opened fire.

In a statement, Tyson Foods told the Washington Post, "We're awaiting word on his condition". Our family is now here with him and we continue to ask for privacy and understanding while we focus on Matt and his recovery.

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee of Genesee County was at a different baseball practice for Democrats. "We should be extremely grateful for Capitol Police this morning and other first responders on the scene for their heroic work", Hill wrote. We're praying for him and we love him.
