Trump sits by bedside of congressman wounded in shooting

Alexandria police chief Michael Brown said his officers arrived within minutes and engaged Hodgkinson, together with Capitol Police officers.
Police secure the area near the baseball field where dozens of Republican members of Congress were fired upon, wounding five people.
A shooting that took place at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning might have been dramatically worse if House Majority Whip Steve Scalise had not been present, according to some congressmen involved in the incident. The attacker was shot by police and later died.
Congressman ScaliseHospital officials said Wednesday evening that Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, was still in critical condition after being shot. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at the practice. Gabrielle Giffords of Tucson was wounded in a 2011 shooting.
The shooter, identified as a 66-year-old IL man who had vented at Republicans on social media, fired repeatedly at the baseball field in suburban Alexandria, Virginia, Reuters reported.
Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Tim Slater declined to comment on whether the gunman had a "vendetta" against Republicans. "Our team moved into our dugout and huddled up in a prayer for them", he said. One was shot herself. "He dragged himself into the infield from the outfield about 15 yards".

Scalise, who was standing at the second base plate, was struck by gunfire and collapsed. Two congressman said they had sustained minor injuries while trying to take cover. "We had a 10-year-old boy with us". Mika was listed in critical condition Wednesday, while Griner and Barth were in stable condition.
"I immediately heard about a dozen, 14 or so gunshots, go off", said David Woodruff, who was jogging by the field at the time of the shooting. "I think we're lucky Scalise was there because this was his security detail and without them, it would have been a massacre". "I can not believe that based on how members of Congress look that they play baseball instead of softball", he joked.
"They ran right into the fire", Trump said of the officers.
"Inside the gym things were fairly calm, no one was screaming", Britton said.

Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who sought the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, said he had been told Hodgkinson had served as a volunteer with his campaign. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society, and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".
Despite the shooting, the annual congressional baseball game will go ahead Thursday as planned at Nationals Park. Paul Ryan called Tim to offer the family well wishes. "I am thankful for the great courage of the Capitol Police, who were my protectors after I was shot and became my friends".
The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m.
