Shortly after the shooting, Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said on the Senate floor that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign a year ago.
Pelosi noted that Democratic lawmakers were practicing at another field when the shooting unfolded Wednesday morning, and noted that there was "no security there" because neither she nor House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, are not on the team.
Scalise, R-La., like other members of leadership, is assigned a full-time security detail from U.S. Capitol Police, who guard him in Washington and at home in his district.
It is hoped that tonight's game will reaffirm the recent calls for unity and requests that both political sides turn down the incendiary rhetoric they have used against each other. But barbed comments weren't long in coming.
In remarks at the White House focused on a new apprenticeship program, Trump said that the shooting could bring unity to a divided nation. She noted that she has received numerous threats herself over the years, and is now the target of millions of dollars in negative ads in a House district in Georgia where a hard-fought special election will take place next week.
Ms Pelosi noted that Mr Trump resorted to violent language at times on the campaign trail, and she accused Republicans of "sanctimony" in seeking to place blame on the left.
"Steve is a wonderful friend he's been a wonderful mentor not only to me, not only to the Louisiana delegation to which he's a member of but to the entire Republican congress" said Rep. Ralph Abraham.
At least one Republican shared the view that Trump bore some responsibility for the shootings. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", he said.
Michael Caputo, who served as an adviser for Trump's presidential campaign, blamed a Democratic Party obsession with possible Trump campaign and administration ties to Russian Federation for the shooting. Democrats won in an 11-2 blowout.
In a final flourish of bipartisan camaraderie, Democrat Mike Doyle, his team's manager, accepted the trophy, then gave it to his Republican counterpart Joe Barton to put in Mr Scalise's office on behalf of the Democrats.
For their part, some Republicans seem taken aback by an intensity on the left that threatens to overwhelm them in the 2018 midterm elections.
Several politicians are expected to turn out to Thursday night's event. Two of the three major news channels, CNN and Fox, carried the charity game live, with CNN's Erin Burnett anchoring her show from the stadium.
