Portraits emerge of officers hailed as heroes at shooting

"They ran right into those guns and the bullets, and they saved a lot of lives".

Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey are the heroes who kept the shooting on Wednesday from being the "massacre" Congress members say it could have been.

In this photo provided by Ken Branson/MasterMIND Productions, Capitol Police Officer David Bailey in Cary, N.C., August 6, 2016. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who was present at the shooting scene where five people including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise were shot during baseball practice, said this after the incident. Casey Adams Jones met Bailey while he was a student there and said in an interview Thursday that they've become close friends in the 10 years since.

"What I clearly recall is an incredible amount of focus and professionalism and dedication every time I saw her regardless of what the assignment was or what she was doing", he said. "The only chance we had was that the shots were returned by the Capitol Hill police".

Bailey loves traveling, going to the gym and putting Heinz ketchup on everything, Adams Jones and fraternity brother Leonardo Williams said.

Dine, who left the agency in 2016, recalled Griner as a hardworking officer. Wenstrup "was getting some kind of scissors device to cut through the pants" to get to the wound on Scalise's hip.

Pence had visited the hospital where Scalise is being treated earlier in the day.

That matched her attitude on the basketball court, according to her coach at Mt. Hebron High School.

Griner finished high school in 2002 and went on to Hood College in Frederick. The retired chief called Griner's and Bailey's actions "incredibly courageous and heroic and right on point".

After being shot, Griner and her wife, Tiffany, were given a bouquet of white flowers by President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, as she recovered in the hospital.

"The Congressman and his staff members are all hoping for a speedy recovery for those injured".

"[Griner's] an incredibly able and professional individual who always takes her job and responsibility seriously", Cantor told the publication. Neither he nor relatives could immediately be reached by The Associated Press. America salutes both of their courage.
