Reports said police fired a tazer at the man before taking him into custody.
The Carriage Gates entrance to the parliament has been closed.
The BBC says that the incident does not appear to be related to terrorism and the man has been taken away in a police van.
The man was arrested near the UK Parliament on Friday.
A man has been arrested outside the Houses of Parliament on suspicion he was carrying a knife.
The man, who is in his 30s, was detained on suspicion of possession of a knife.
He was held with his arms against his back just yards from the forecourt of the building, where police officer Keith Palmer was stabbed to death by terrorist Khalid Masood in March.
As per the latest reports, Traffic is flowing normally around Parliament and armed officers are patrolling the area.
A Parliamentary spokesman said: "We are aware of an incident outside the Palace of Westminster, which is being dealt with by the Metropolitan Police".
"Our superb police have handled the situation brilliantly", the witness wrote on Twitter.
